Eke was born in East Dereham in 1860 and was the son of John Eke (1820)
and Martha Cottrill. In 1861 he was living in Wellington Road, East
Dereham. In 1881 he was aged 21, living in Theatre Street, East Dereham
and working as a grocer’s porter In 1891 he was working as a draper's porter at a large warehouse or store in Marylebone. He married Louise Agnes Mayhew in 1895. In 1901 he was working as a night watchman and living at 9 Little Marylebone Street.
